Wanting someone dead is not the same as buying their death. Federal murder for hire requires a deal: a killing in exchange for money, a promised payment, or another real economic benefit. That is exactly one of the fights happening in the Lil Durk federal trial right now. The government alleges a murder-for-hire scheme. The defense position is that the evidence must show more than revenge, relationships, or money spent around the people involved. It must show a real agreement that economic value was offered for the killing itself. Two things can both be true: 1) The money does not have to change hands. A real promise can be enough. 2) But flights, hotels, cars, or general financial support are not automatically payment for murder. So the question is not simply whether money was involved. The question is: Was there a deal to commit murder in exchange for something of economic value? That is the line between revenge and federal murder-for-hire.
