PART 3 of how to paint a model tank, basic weathering and chipping Weathering is the process of making a scale model look as though it has been used and exposed to real-world conditions. Instead of leaving the model with a perfectly clean, freshly painted appearance, a modeller can add effects such as dirt, dust, mud, rust, oil stains, faded paint, and scratches. These effects are especially common on models of tanks, aircraft, cars, ships, and buildings. Chipping is a specific weathering technique that represents areas where paint has been scratched, worn, or knocked away. It is usually applied to places that would receive the most wear, such as edges, handles, hatches, steps, and areas where people or equipment regularly make contact. Chipping can be created with a fine brush, sponge, or special chipping products, often using darker colours to represent the exposed material underneath the paint. Weathering and chipping make a model more realistic because real objects are rarely perfectly clean or undamaged. Vehicles and machinery develop marks and wear through use, weather, movement, and contact with their environment. Adding these details helps tell the model's story and gives it more depth and character.
