The “Wilhelm Scream” is a stock sound effect first recorded in 1951 that has since appeared in hundreds of films. The name comes from its later appearance in the 1953 western ‘The Charge at Feather River’, when a character named Private Wilhelm is shot with an arrow and lets out the same scream. The sound stayed in the Warner Bros. effects library and was reused for decades until sound designer Ben Burtt popularized it again in 1977 by inserting it into ‘Star Wars’, turning it into a recurring inside joke among film sound editors. #cinema #wilhelmscream #insidejoke #soundeffects
