How to See a Private TikTok Account
Updated Oct 7, 2026
The only way to see a private TikTok account is to follow it, and the owner has to approve you first. Go to their profile in the TikTok app and tap Follow. Until they accept, you'll see their name, username and profile photo, but not their videos, bio, likes, Stories or follower lists. Sites that claim to show private accounts can't get around this.
How to Follow a Private TikTok Account
On a private account, the owner approves every follower. Only those people can watch their videos and LIVE videos, read their bio, see their likes, or look through their followers and following lists.
So the way in is to ask:
- In the TikTok app, go to the person's profile.
- Tap Follow.
- Wait for them to approve you. Once they do, you can see their posts and lists like their other followers.
No single post is open to everyone, either. On a private account, TikTok's choices for who can see a post are Followers, Friends or Only you.
Even once you're approved, you won't see posts they've kept to Only you, or posts for Friends unless they follow you back.
Visiting their profile can get noticed, too. If you both have profile view history turned on, they'll see your visit, as our guide to TikTok profile views explains.
Can You See a Private TikTok Account Without Following?
Only the outside of it. TikTok says a private account's name, username and profile photo are always visible to anyone, on or off TikTok, and anyone can find the account in search.
The numbers often show too. We looked up 10 private accounts in October 2026 without logging in, and TikTok gave out the follower, following and like counts for seven of them.
None of those seven showed a bio or any videos, even one that had posted more than 400. For the other three, we got nothing back at all.
So you can often tell how big a private account is, but not who follows it or what it posts.
If the account belongs to a teen, it may be private by default. TikTok makes accounts private for anyone who signs up at 13 to 17, and they can switch to public later.
If you're thinking of going private yourself, here's how to make your TikTok account private.
What Stays Hidden on a Private TikTok Account
Until the owner approves you, all of this stays out of view:
- Their videos and LIVE videos.
- Their bio, and the videos they've liked.
- Their followers and following lists. You might see how many, but not who.
- Their reposts. TikTok only shows a private account's reposts to its followers.
- Their Stories. A private account shares them with Followers, Friends or Only you, just like its posts.
Following doesn't get you everything, though. TikTok says others can't download a private account's posts, Duet or Stitch them, or add them to their own Stories.
If you're on the other side and want to keep your own lists out of sight, here's how to hide followers on TikTok.
Do Private TikTok Viewers Work?
No. TikTok only shows a private account's posts to people the owner has approved, and a website looking it up for you isn't one of them.
That goes for us too. Our anonymous TikTok viewer doesn't use any TikTok account, so for a private account it shows only what TikTok shows anyone: the name, photo and counts.
Search for a private TikTok viewer and you'll find pages planted on unrelated sites, plus lists of tools to try.
In October 2026, one of those lists ranked near the top of Google. Its first two picks were monitoring apps sold to parents, which track the phone they're set up on.
Its free pick asked you to fill in surveys first.
Be careful with anything that asks for your TikTok login. TikTok's advice is not to open suspicious links that ask for it, and not to connect your account to apps you don't know.
Can You Message a Private Account on TikTok?
Not until you follow it. TikTok says people can't send a private account a message request unless they follow it.
Once you're approved, you can send a request, which they can accept or delete, unless they've turned requests off. If they follow you back, you're friends and can message each other directly.
